Jan Jansky
doctor. In 1907, when examining the coagulability of the blood of psychiatric patients, he discovered the four basic blood groups, now known as A, B, AB and O.

Jaroslav Heyrovsky
chemist, and inventor of the method known as polarography, which makes it possible to determine the composition of chemical solutions using electrodes. In 1959 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry. The card depicts Heyrovsky's polarograph from the mid-1930s.

Otto Wichterle
chemist, patented 150 inventions, the most famous of which is hydrogel, used to make the first soft contact lenses in the world. This card depicts his machine for making lenses from 1961.

Vaclav Laurin and Vaclav Klement
founders of the Czech automobile industry. In 1895 they began making motorcycles, followed by cars in 1905. The first Skoda was made in 1925. This card depicts the first Laurin and Klement car, the Voiturette, of 1905.

Frantisek Krizik
electrical engineer and businessman, often called the "Czech Edison". One of his inventions was the arc-lamp, and in 1891 he built the first electric railway in Prague. The illustration shows a Krizik tram and a tram ticket from the end of the 19th century.

Josef Ressel
engineer and inventor. In the first half of the 19th century he experimented - among other things - with the ship's propeller. He discovered that it should best be placed at the stern of the ship. This card shows a Ressel ship's propeller.

Jan Evangelista Purkyne
natural scientist, founder of the theory that all living organisms are made up of cells. Introduced the tem protoplasma as the basic material of cells. In 1839 he set up the first Physiological Institute in Europe, in Wroclaw (Breslau).

Josef Bozek
engineer and inventor. In 1815 he built the first steam driven vehicle in the Czech Lands and one of the first in Europe. The card shows an invitation to a demonstration of the first steam vehicle and paddle steamer in Prague in 1817.
