News Vítkovice Machinery Group to open London office

The largest Czech machinery firm, Vítkovice Machinery Group, will open an office in London later this year, the company firm said in a press release on Tuesday. Vítkovice Machinery Group would like to boost its sales of hi-tech machinery components for the energy and nuclear sectors. The company, which would like to expand their exports from last year’s 12 billion to 13 billion crowns in 2014, sees the UK as one of potentially growing markets, the firm’s trade manager, Břetislav Nitka, said.

First Buddhist stupa unveiled in Czech Republic

Some 2,000 people attended the unveiling of the first Buddhist stupa in the Czech Republic on Sunday in the village of Těnovice in the Plzeň region. The stupa, which is used by Buddhists as a place of meditation, is a seven-metre-tall structure made of granite and contains a treasury filled with various objects, such as texts, Buddha relics and small offerings. The village at the foot of the Brdy hills has been a home to the Diamond Way Buddhist centre since 2003. The Diamond Way is the most popular of the Buddhist teaching methods in the Czech Republic. In 2007 it was registered as the country's first and only Buddhist religious society. 

Pliskova sisters claim doubles title in Hong Kong

Czech twin sisters, Karolína and Kristýna Plíšková, won the doubles final at the WTA Hong Kong Tennis Open on Sunday, defeating Patricia Mayr-Achleitner of Austria and Arina Rodionova of Australia 6:2, 2:6, 12:10. It is the third doubles title for the 22-year old sisters this year. Karolína Plíšková has previously failed to claim the singles title, losing to Germany’s Sabine Lisicki but 5:7, 3:6. 

Rain triggers landslide near Břeclav

Heavy rain triggered a landslide in the region of Břeclav in southern Moravia on Sunday. The incident happened at a campsite by the river, leaving one caravan buried under the debris. One woman was reportedly injured and had to be taken to hospital. The campside in being evacuated. 

Event marks 100th anniversary of Czechoslovak Legions

An event to mark the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Czechoslovak Legions is held at the gardens of Prague’s Czernin Palace, the seat of the Czech Republic’s Foreign Ministry, on Sunday. Visitors can see several exhibitions on the history of the legions and hear a concert performed by the Castle Guard and Czech Police Band. 

Flood alerts still in place for some parts of Czech Republic

Lower-level flood alerts are still in place for some parts of the Czech Republic. Meteorologists warn that rivers could still rise in the regions of south Bohemia, Vysočina and Znojmo. The Jevišovka river in the Znojmo region inundated several houses on Sunday afternoon, forcing some 15 people out of their homes. Fire crews in the areas affected by floods reported dozens of emergency calls. Rain is expected to cease in most of the country by midnight. 

European Heritage Days come to close

Sunday is the last day of the European Heritage Days, an annual event, organized jointly by the Council of Europe and the European Commission, which offers people the opportunity to visit buildings, monuments and sites, many of which are not normally accessible to the public. The Czech Republic has taken part in the celebrations since 1991 and for the past week, visitors were able to view hundreds of monuments and historical sites for free. This weekend focuses mainly on technical monuments and spa architecture. 

Around 80,000 people attend Kabát concert in Prague

Over 80,000 people attended an open-air concert by the Czech rock band Kabát in Prague’s Vypich district on Saturday night. It was the biggest concert ever played in the capital by a Czech group. The show marked the 25th anniversary of the foundation of Kabát, who in recent years have become one of the most popular bands in the country. Their previous koncert at Vypich five years ago was attended by 60.000 people. 

Czech Republic loses 3:0 to France in Davis-Cup semi-finals

Two-time defending champion, the Czech Republic, has lost 3:0 to France in the Davis-Cup semi-finals. In the double match on Saturday, the French pair Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfred Tsonga defeated the Czechs Radek Štěpánek and Lukáš Rosol 6:7, 6:4, 7:6, 6:1. 

Regional development ministry to provide more funds for Mountain Rescue Service

Regional development ministry to provide more funds for Mountain Rescue Service The Ministry for Regional Development on Saturday confirmed additional funds for the Czech Mountain Rescue Service by 15 million crowns to 110 million crowns. The Mountain Rescue Service or Hosrká služba, which on Saturday marks 80 years of its existence, planned to reduce some of its services, due to lack of finances. The rescue service currently employs some 70 people; another 380 rescuers work on a volunteer basis. 

PM Sobotka repeats objections to EU sanctions against Russia

Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka repeated his objections to EU sanctions against Russia. Speaking at the meeting of the central executive committee of the Social Democratic Party on Saturday, Mr Sobotka said that toughening economic sanctions against Russia won’t change its attitude towards Ukraine. The prime minister also said it was important that EU takes a unified stance in relation to Russia and prevents the emergence of a new Iron Curtain in the east of Ukraine.
