Record numbers attend 40th Summer Film School

A record number of visitors attended this year’s Summer Film School in the South Moravian town of Uherské Hradiště, organisers said after its conclusion on Saturday. Over 6,200 people took part in the 40th edition of the event, which as well as screening around 280 films included dozens of accompanying events. Special guests this year included the British director Peter Greenaway.

Heavy storms bring flood warnings

Heavy storms are expected in several parts of the Czech Republic on Sunday evening, with the Pardubice, Hradec Králové and Vysočina regions likely to see the most intense rainfall and strongest winds, the Czech Hydro-Meteorological Institute warned on Sunday. The agency has issued flood alerts for some places already hit by a wave of storms crossing the country from east to west. Trains were temporarily halted in some places and summer camps were evacuated.

New children’s film by Jan Svěrák set for cinema release

Tři bratři (Three Brothers), a children’s film by Jan Svěrák, received a pre-premiere in Ostrava on Sunday ahead of entering cinema distribution in the middle of this month. The film is a musical fairytale and was written by the director’s father Zdeněk Svěrák and Jaroslav Uhlíř. Jan Svěrák, who directed the Oscar-winning Kolya, took on the project while attempting to raise funding for an English-language movie.

Tim Burton exhibition in Prague sold over 100,000 tickets, say organisers

Since it opened at the end of March, over 100,000 people have visited the exhibition Tim Burton and His World at Prague’s House at the Stone Bell gallery, organisers said on its final day on Sunday. The show features props, models and sketches relating to the director’s films as well as drawings for projects that were never carried out. Burton himself appeared at the opening of the exhibition and at a concert of music from his films at Prague’s Municipal House.

Manager: Elite cycling teams interested in König after impressive Tour de France

After recently coming seventh in his debut Tour de France, the Czech cyclist Leopold König has attracted the interest of three teams from the sport’s elite WorldTour, his manager Brian Smith said in an interview for cyclingnews.com. König, who is 26, is due to hold talks in the next week with the Netapp-Endura team, with which he is contracted until the end of the season. Smith said the Czech needed to acquire experience with one of the world’s best teams.

Kreuziger given provisional suspension in connection with doping regulations

The Czech cyclist Roman Kreuziger has been provisionally suspended for breaching anti-doping regulations based on his biological passport, the International Cycling Union has announced. It said it had made the decision after receiving information that Kreuziger intended to participate in upcoming races. The 28-year-old finished fifth in last year’s Tour de France but was omitted from the Tinkoff-Saxo team for this year’s race after the problems with his biological passport were discovered. He is set to face International Cycling Union disciplinary proceedings.

Hejnová to miss rest of season due to injury

The world 400m hurdling champion Zuzana Hejnová has announced she will not be competing again this year due to injury. Hejnová, who is 27, pulled out of the Czech Athletics Championships in Ostrava on Saturday after the heats and said she would not be attending the European Championships in Zurich in a fortnight’s time. The Olympic bronze medallist has been suffering from an inflammation in her ankle that began during comeback from a metatarsal fracture.
